Learning without borders

From European insurance regulation to advanced Excel — on why a field should not be a box.

Crossing the line

When the AI-in-insurance project came to me, I knew nothing about EIOPA or BaFin. Week one went to listing terms, week two to reading primary reports, week three to drafting an analytical framework. Three months later the same project covered case studies of four European firms.

My experience: the borders between fields live in our minds more than in the sources. Finance, technology and regulation are three languages of one story; learn all three early enough and you understand the story sooner.

Key takeaways

  • Learn tools for the goal, not for a field's label.
  • Primary sources are the fastest teachers.
  • Draft a framework; frameworks organise chaos.
