Option Strategy Profits with Real Data: An Apple Case Study

Long call, short call, long put, short put — four simple strategies whose risk profiles we measure precisely with real AAPL data.

Why these four strategies

Every complex option strategy — from straddles to iron condors — is ultimately built from four blocks: long and short calls, long and short puts. Once their profit profiles are understood with real data, any combination becomes readable.

Building the calculation

I pulled real AAPL contracts from Yahoo Finance and built a payoff table for each strategy across a range of terminal prices: each scenario's profit equals the value at expiry minus the initial premium. The Excel payoff chart matched the textbook figure — this time with live numbers.

The subtleties mattered: a short call has limited profit and unlimited loss; a long put is downside insurance with a certain cost. Comparing profiles across contracts with different moneyness and maturities showed that picking the contract matters as much as picking the strategy.

Risk–return across scenarios

The final evaluation ran across alternative price scenarios: what if the stock rallies twenty percent? What if it stays flat? The result puts numbers on what is usually said qualitatively: no strategy is absolutely better; the right choice is a function of price outlook, risk appetite and cost.

Key takeaways

  • Four simple blocks underlie every complex option strategy.
  • Contract selection (moneyness and maturity) is as decisive as strategy selection.
  • Measure profit profiles across scenarios, not one forecast.
